Since where you stand on Leash seems to be one of the great divides in the Pearl Jam community I thought that might be a fun one to do next.
Troubled souls unite We got ourselves tonight..
I am fuel, you are friends We got the means to make amends I am lost, I am no guide But I'm by your side I am right by your side...
Young lover I stand it was their idea, i proved to be a man Take my fucking hand It was their idea, i proved to be a man
Will myself to find a home A home within myself We will find a way We will find our place
Drop the leash, drop the leash... Get outta' my fuckin' face Drop the leash, drop the leash... Get outta' my fuckin' face Drop the leash, drop the leash... Get outta' my fuckin' face Drop the leash, we are young Drop the leash, we are young Get outta' my fuckin' face... Drop the leash, drop the leash... Get outta' my, my... Delight, delight, delight in our youth... Get outta' my fuckin' face...
Personally I love this song. I love its energy, I love its aggression, and I love its optimism. There are some lines I'm not too crazy about--in particulary the young lover I stand verse (what is that about?) and the we are young line, but there are a lot of really great lines in here

There is such a wonderful sense of solidarity in this song--that despite how fucked up the world might be we can come to together with each other through music and just beleive and belong. It really sums up the spirit of their live experience, which is kind of why I'm shocked they don't play it more. I guess having forty year olds singing we are young and delight in our youth is a bit much but they can change that to you are young and delight in your youth easily enough (look at Not For You)
I heard all apologies on the radio yesterday which is what made me think of Leash. On the one hand you have the hopless post modern despair of Nirvana (All alone is all we are) compared to the sense of community in leash. it kind of sums up what the two bands stood for, and why Pearl Jam is still here.
I'm pretty sure they'll play this one in 06 and I'll be so pissed if I'm not there to hear it.
Other people's thoughts?

i thought we would get it at philly but after the hob show, i think we can stick a fork in it. we started the leash chant again when ed was taking requests and he was like, "enough with the leash shit" so i think it is retired. however, i agree with you that the reason it is not played is because it was written when the members were like 26 and full oc angst and those feelings may no longer be there but the lyric change to us would make sense but we to, are getting up there in age. who knows. i like it, i hope they play it.

its a great song. its only as popular as it is among fans b/c they dont play it anymore. still a great song, it sounds great on some of the older songs, but its slightly overrated. id much rather hear 'rats'

the 'young lover i stand' is about an accidental pregnancy and subsequent abortion (this is made explicit in the vs. liner notes to the song). pretty intense stuff and something eddie, among many others, has experienced. it fits in perfectly with the song's theme: a young man makes a serious mistake, and his choice is whether its overwhelms him or he finds the strength to carry on, with the help of his community.

yeah.."it was their idea, i'd prove to be a man.." a young guy just wants to cool, to be a man, by getting laid...then he's forced to deal with a lot bigger consequences than he'd imagined

it does add much more depth to the song looking at it in that light, huh. i forget what it says on the vs. liner notes but it says something explicit about an unwanted pregnancy right near those lyrics, something like "didn't mean to get her pregnant"

It does--I'm not sure about the Young lover I stand line. Maybe it's just an awkward lyric

i dont agree with the "they dont play it cuz there not young" the song isnt about him its generalized so i dont think thats the reason, i think its just one of those songs that they let slip through and now they dont even know how to play it

there's no way they don't know how to play it. this song doesn't need any practice.

That's funny he said that Jason, I guess that kind of kills all hopes, huh?
Well they'll have time to learn it before 06

That's awesome. Much better than the daughter cover. GEG, when is your album coming out?

I saw the who last year and I personally thought that that was weak. A bunch of old guys saying that they hoped theyd die bore they got old. Dont get me wrong-it was a fucking amazing show-just thought that was a little odd
