Freezin', rests his head on a pillow made of concrete, again Feelin' maybe he'll see a little better, set a days Hand out, faces that he sees time again ain't that familiar Dark grin, he can't help when his happy looks insane
Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies He don't know, so he chases them away Someday yet, he'll begin his life again Life again, life again...
Kneelin', looking through the paper though he doesn't know to read Prayin', now to something that has never showed him anything Feelin', understands the weather of the winters on its way Ceilings, few and far between all the legal halls of shame
Even flow, thoughts arrive like butterflies He don't know, so he chases them away Someday yet, he'll begin his life again Whispering hands, gently lead him away Him away, him away...
(forget about him...)

This was the song that made me a fan, and is still the song I most look forward to live.
I love the fact that they wrote a real gut kick song about being homeless, and it is too bad they never made a concept video for it. The imagery in this song is terrific. Lyrically this one is an underrated classic.

Those are all first class lines. I also love the dogged hopefulness that runs through the song (Someday yet, he'll begin his life again) attatched to the reality of how hard it is (Whispering hands gently lead him away).
And just when I thought i couldn't love this song anymore I discovered the Alive maxi single/greatest hits version. So much tighter, so much darker, and the great outro
I died...I died and you just stood there...I died and you watched...I died and you walked by
Every time I go into NYC it breaks my heart to see people begging on the street when I am off to go have an expensive dinner with friends. So little is done to help them, and in a country this wealthy it is ridiculous that anyone should have to root through trash to find a meal. This song captures the desperation, the abject lonliness and isolation that comes with it, better than almost any other song on the subject I've heard.
And of course there is the subliminal never vote republican line.
An amazing piece of work. One of the greatest rock songs ever written in my opinion.

I'm sure bammer will say something soon, but this song does kick ass on a lyrical and musical level. Who ever said only Riot Act was political needs to examin the lyrics on this too - PJ have been political from the start. The great thing is that the music really moves you and Mike's solos live keep the song as fresh as it can be after all these years.
I'm apparently the only person utterly unimpressed with the lyrics on this one. Like Once, it's a good song until you really start paying attention and notice that most of the lines are dully predictable attempts at "dark" subject matter. For early Pearl Jam rockers, I prefer Jeremy, Porch, and Garden. Ironically, I'm not so wowed by those first two songs live anymore, but Even Flow seems a lot better these days than it used to. Go figure.
Great live song, some insane guitar work, but mostly disinteresting lyrics (except for the last line in the second verse).

not even the solos live? or would you rather hear the improv solos in something like immortality or 1/2 full
is the hate of the song from overexposure?

i'd much rather hear immortality or 1/2 full. soon as i hear the opening notes of e-flow at a show, i go get something to eat or walk around or take a piss.
its overexposure and the fact that its just not a good song. those lyrics make me cringe.

I agree that it should be replaced / mixed up way more in shows (like the other staples) but it still can communicate to people and although Ed's writing has gotten way better, there is still some power in the simple way the concept of the song is expressed.

Even Flow was the song that introduced me to Pearl Jam back in the day.
This song always gets me pumped when I hear it and the wah! version is great to listen to while at the gym.

I think Ten ran over his dog.

I agree except for the live McCready solo. There's just something about this song that I've never liked, whether it be '92 or '04. It's not the lyrics, it's not the theme, it's not the music...I just never liked it.

my favorite version is msg 1 mainly because of mikes solo.
i like it better when it's played slower like it was back in the day.
