Last Kiss
Oh where oh where can my baby be? The lord took her away from me She's gone to heaven so i got to be good So i can see my baby when i leave this world
We were out on a date in my daddy's car We hadn't driven very far There in the road straight ahead A car was stalled the engine was dead I couldn't stop so i swerved to the right I'll never forget the sound that night The screaming tires, the busting glass The painful scream that i heard last
Oh where oh where can my baby be? The lord took her away from me She's gone to heaven so i got to be good So i can see my baby when i leave this world
When i woke up the rain was pouring down There were people standing all around Something warm flowing through my eyes But somehow i found my baby that night I lifted her head she looked at me and said Hold me darling just a little while I held her close i kissed her our last kiss I found the love that i knew i had missed Well now she's gone even though i hold her tight I lost my love, my life, that night
Oh where oh where can my baby be? The lord took her away from me She's gone to heaven so i got to be good So i can see my baby when i leave this world

I may lose what little Pearl Jam street cred I have left but I’m going to come out of the closet here and say I love Last Kiss and I’ve loved it since the first time I heard it.
Musically it’s nothing special. I suppose it is authentic to the 1950s style vibe of the song, and Mike and Stone give it a distorted twist that makes it sound more Pearl Jamish, but I prefer the cleaner acoustic versions. However, Last Kiss is Eddie’s show and he nails it. Although the vibrato could be turned down a bit here he narrates the song perfectly. He sounds like he is in that slight daze you get after you’re in a big accident and his voice oozes sympathy and pain with just the right amount of teenage melodrama needed for the song to work. I’ll admit that the first time I heard the studio version I got a little misty (truth be told, I can’t think of another Pearl Jam song I can say that about), and then a little embarrassed at myself that this was the case, which is exactly what this song is supposed to elicit. A wistful, bittersweet nostalgia for a simpler time that really wasn’t any simpler
Plus this one is always fun live. A great huge sing along love in and singing the oh oh ohs at the end with everyone is a blast
It’s not a 5 star song, but given the limits of the genre they are paying homage to I don’t think I could have given any song of this type 5 stars. But it is heartfelt, innocent fun that doesn’t insult you or trip over itself trying to present a relaxed pearl jam that doesn’t really exist in their original catalogue. It does bother me that of all the songs in their catalogue this is technically their biggest hit, but I blame that on the music industry and the listening public, not the song.
4 stars

I'm going to relinquish all credibilty as well. I love this song. This was the first Pearl Jam song that my daughter and I learned to play, and we still play it all the time with my daughter doing improv vocalizations at the end. For me, it's still a fun moment when it turns up on bootlegs. 3 stars.

Quite funny the fact that this song is Pearl Jam's most succesfull single... I like it, and is very good live. In Lisbon, Eddie walked in the middle of the arena, and sang it from the soundboard

it never was released as a single in Europe afaik, so it's not a crowdpleaser here.. Ed probably understood that last year so didn't bother putting it on the setlists this year (fine by me).
it's a funny song or it's immensely depressing..depending how twisted you are
musically, it's ok but there's many other covers, let alone PJ songs I'd rather listen to..

I used to love the song. But it has not aged well and I really don't need to hear it live. I think the fact that it's a sing-along live doesn't hold water with me. If Ed started singing "99 Bottles of Beer On the Wall" I'm quite sure it would become a sing-along but I still wouldn't need to ever hear it.

The backround story for this one, how they just went and recorded it on the first take and it became a smash hit is really cool... Even thought it's a cover, I think of it as their's, in a way like "I fought the law" is totally a Clash song.
Last Kiss sounds in a way like their more simple, slow mellow tunes like "Parachutes", "Wishlist" and "Light years". Those songs are musically more interesting, but the main thing about Last Kiss is the simple, tragic story. It's predictable but Ed makes it work.
Got played a lot in rock radio here when it got out, but still once in a while I like to hear it and I'm not tired of it.

3 stars. I still like single version better than live, but both are horrendously overplayed (by radio and the band, respectively). It's a good little cover, but certainly nowhere near the band's best. Ed's vocals are sincere and perfect for what the song is.

This song is vintage 1999 for me. The year I graduated high school. It takes me back and effectivley makes me feel younger...or at least it opens an avenue for me to see those days. They were good ones.
I almost gave the song 3 stars, for no other reason than I felt I had to...but of course that's not true. I gave it 4 stars. I love the song. They did a perfect job of bringing an old song to date.
I dont particularly love the song live, but Stip's right...it's a great sing-a-long.

Would have been okay if it never got wide release
Is this actually a problem for anyone? If it is, I'd love to hear why. IMO, a song doesn't lose quality when it's released as a single or something like that.

that means it's overated. it's only so often in setlists becasue it was their most succesful single. otherwise, considering the quality of the song, one would think it'd be more of a rarity..but they have to pander to the casual fan...much like Jerermy or Alive except those are better songs to start with.

given the usual amounts of hate this song usually gets around these parts, im surprised to see the generally positive sentiments presented thus far.
i give it a 3. this song is what it is. fun, catchy, simple, etc. the only reason i used to skip it all the time was because i had a dream about a scenario just like this happening to my girlfriend and hearing it always made me remember it.
